Mariangeli Mercado-Torres

Mariangeli Mercado-Torres holds a B.A in Arts and Humanities with concentration in Pre-Law and two minors in Criminology and Political Science, having graduated Cum Laude from the Pontifical University of Puerto Rico, Ponce Campus in 2016; and a Juris Doctor from the Pontifical University of Puerto Rico School of Law in 2019, graduating Magna Cum Laude.

In the midst of the pandemic, Mariangeli Mercado Torres was admitted to the legal profession in February 2021 for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Shortly thereafter, in August 2021 she was admitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. As a young attorney she is committed to assist in any federal civil case with great passion and professionalism.

In law school, Mariangeli Mercado-Torres was a Criminal Procedure Tutor for the PUCPR Law School Academic Program (2018-2019). She also served as Justice for the De Diego Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International (2018-2019), later being nominated as Assistant District Justice for District XXVI (Puerto Rico) and serving as such during 2019 to 2020.

Mariangeli Mercado-Torres did her criminal law clinic in the Legal Assistance Society of PR (SAL, for Spanish acronym) in 2019. She worked for the public defender’s office in the Guayama Judicial Region and was assigned to litigate different criminal cases from the Penal Code of Puerto Rico and Special Criminal Laws, by providing legal aid and assistance to the population that was unable to afford a private legal representation. Also, in her last year of Law School, Mariangeli Mercado Torres provided civil legal consulting services and legal representation as part of the PUCPR Legal Clinic in Ponce, PR.

Specifically, by assisting low income citizens in order to pursue their civil cases. In addition, in 2018 she was part of prestigious Internship Program with the Judicial Branch of Puerto Rico as a paralegal. At the internship, she had the opportunity to work for two judges in the Guayama Judicial Center. One of them being at the time the administrative judge of the Guayama Region, Hon. Carmen Otero.  By her side, Mariangeli Mercado Torres worked on Criminal cases and with the Drug Court Program. Meanwhile with the Hon. Cristina E. Suau, she worked with civil cases.

Outside of the legal world, Mariangeli Mercado Torres has a diverse background in theater, performing arts, and tourism. As former model she has volunteer pro bono in spreading the message of self-esteem and empowerment to young ladies all over Puerto Rico.
